Society
of Sarita of the Blessed Mothers
The Sociedad
de Sarita de las Benditas Madres (the Society of Sarita of the
Blessed Mothers) is dedicated to intercessory prayer and good works for
the relief of persons affected by laws controlling immigration across
international borders.
The
Blessed Mothers are persons who, regardless of gender, join in the society to
unite themselves spiritually with the Blessed Mother, the virgin mother of the
Lord Jesus Christ, who, from her heavenly throne, nurtures and cares for all
persons, particularly those in distress caused by problems associated with
immigration.
The
Sarita Society takes inspiration from the life of Sarita Kenedy East, the
founder of the John G. and Marie Stella Kenedy Memorial Foundation, a
charitable trust she created before her death in 1961 to provide relief for the
very poor.
For
information about Sarita Kenedy East, consult a story relating a miraculous
apparition experienced by a Catholic layman of the deceased lady at her
gravesite at La Parra ranch in Sarita, Texas. The lady appeared
with her mother, Marie Stella, and the Blessed Virgin. The story is on the
Internet at "Go
Tell the Bishop". The story also relates a sad history of difficulties
with Sarita's charitable foundation.
The society encourages persons to:
(1)
engage in intercessory prayer (such as daily recitation of the Holy Rosary) and
pray for a heightened awareness of the needs of immigrants,
(2)
communicate to those in ecclesiastical and civil authority to take concrete
action to meet the needs of immigrants (pray for bishops and other ministers to
use church funds to provide assistance for immigrants, particularly for mothers
and their children needing nutrition and health care),
(3)
volunteer or donate to existing relief agencies already assisting immigrants
(if no agency is available in your area, create one, such as making sack
lunches or health care packages to distribute to immigrants), and
(4) tell
the society by email what you are doing to help immigrants so that others may
know of your efforts.
CONGRESS ON MINISTRY FOR STREET PEOPLE OPENS IN ROME
Archbishop Agostino Marchetto, secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People, on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, opened the First European Meeting of the Pastoral Ministry for the Road, a four-day meeting to discuss, in the archbishop’s words, “four distinct areas of concern for those who live and work on and in the roads and streets: road users – especially those who are drivers, both commercial and domestic; the pastoral ministry for the liberation of street women – prostitutes and sex ‘workers’; the pastoral care of street children and lastly the pastoral care of the homeless.”
He told participants in the opening session that “the meeting’s program has been tailored to reflect these different aspects of pastoral engagement.” “Guiding us on this journey together,” the archbishop told his guests, “in addition to your own experience, will be two valuable documents published by the Pontifical Council: our 2004 Instruction ‘Erga migrantes caritas Christi’ - The Love of Christ for Migrants” - and the 2007 council document, ‘Guidelines for the Pastoral Care of the Road/Street’.”
“At the heart of our encounter,” said the council president, “the words ‘transformation and redemption’, in all their richness and many faceted understandings, should stand before us. We come here to listen and share stories of our experiences and encounters on the roads and in the streets. For nearly all of you, these stories will come from a deep pastoral experience, from a deep love of the poor and oppressed, the marginalized and the unloved. These are also stories of encounters that have been led and inspired by the action of the Holy Spirit. Some indeed will have brought about change and renewal for those concerned – pastoral agents included, whilst others may just be experiences of chance or failed meetings, ones in which you have continued ‘on your way’."
